General features: Density 700-1300 kg/m3. Heartwood brown, dark-brown or red and darker than sapwood. Heartwood of A. peuce becomes purple as wood ages. Odour on freshly-cut heartwood absent, with the exception of A. farnesiana from which a pungent and unpleasant odour was emitted when freshly-cut in the field.
Microscopic features:
Vessels Tangential vessel diameter: range 10-171 µm; mean 49 µm; SD 22 µm; average maximum 44-141 µm; n = 5233 vessels. Vessels per square millimetre: range 10-270 vessels per mm2; n = 112 sampled areas. Vessels usually in radial multiples of 2-3 vessels, sometimes occurring with 4 or more vessels or solitary vessels. Perforation plates simple without prominent rim. Vessel to vessel pits vestured.
Axial parenchyma Axial parenchyma paratracheal and scanty to vasicentric, aliform to confluent or confluent to banded. Marginal bands present or absent. Chambered parenchyma present (often with crystals).
Rays Rays 1-4 cells wide with uniseriate rays present, sometimes exclusive (n = 2773 rays). Rays of uniform width and not wider than vessels. Rays 2-16 per tangential mm (n = 169 sampled areas). Ray height: range 28-423 µm; mean 125 µm; SD 51 µm; n = 2846 rays. Rays homocellular.
Helical thickenings Absent.
Physical and chemical tests: Chrome azurol-s test negative. Heartwood fluorescence present. Froth test weakly positive to positive to positive (JAB135 negative). Ethanol extract fluorescence present. Ethanol extract discoloured (JAB135 colourless). Water extract discoloured. Water extract fluorescence absent.
